Shockproof Crap Detector

Hemingway was once asked to identify one essential ingredient that is required to be a great writer.

He replied, “In order to be a great writer a person must have a built in, shockproof crap detector.”

Tribalism

The Price of Belonging

In this polarized day and age, we have grouped ourselves into tribes. Internet logarithms are designed to make sure that we see only those images that support the ideology of our particular clan.

When we are constantly bombarded by only those messages that support the prejudices of our side, we tend not to question what we’re being told. We are blind to the possibility that our way of thinking might actually be shortsighted, misleading, one sided or simply incorrect.

This tribal POV condemns us to highly limited ways of looking at the world and thus highly limited modes of behavior. None of us is free of it.

Courageous Subversives

Questioning  can be dangerous

There are a few brave souls who have developed a competent “crap detector”  and who are not completely captivated by the beliefs of the community to which they belong.

I admire those courageous subversives who become aware of the built-in biases of their clan. There is probably nothing more dangerous to community group-think  than a person in the process of discovering that the language of their tribe is limiting.

We know that questioning the ideology of one’s pack is not an easy thing to do. All cliques are threatened by ideas that are counter to their way of thinking. Most groups have “gatekeepers” who guard against defectors and unauthorized thinking.

Speaking the truth to your tribe, could result in being shunned. That’s not something most people can survive.

From where I stand

My blogs

There is a lot of rubbish out there on the internet. Of course, anyone is free to believe what they want, but it becomes a problem when one group tries to impose their nonsense onto others. That kind of behavior must be challenged.

“From Where I Stand”  will attempt to present alternative ways to evaluate the  nonsense we encounter. Check out the “Published” page for posted blogs.

Neil Postman

I must credit Neil Postman for these ideas. This controversial book was written in the late 60s and has turned out to be quite prophetic.

“When you plug something into a wall, someone is getting plugged into you. Which means you need a new pattern of defense, perception, understanding and evaluation.
You need a new kind of education.”
